History of Stonewall Grey: The Valley’s Own Bluestone

Historic Bluestone BuildingJMU Bluestone BuildingBluestone is at the heart of the history of the Shenandoah Valley. A variety of limestone, "bluestone" got its name due to its dark blue-grey color that, over time, weathers to a light grey.

The first settlers used bluestone as one of the primary building materials, and evidence of bluestone’s endurance can be seen throughout the Valley – the "Bluestone Campus" of James Madison University, the Virginia Military Institute, Washington & Lee University, Belle Grove Plantation in Strasburg, and the Stonewall Jackson Home.Historic Bluestone Home
